Apartment:
- Cancel your rental contract
- Sell your stuff / organise shipping or storage
- Clean and renovate (e.g. paint walls, fill in picture hook holes). This varies according to your lease contract and the condition of the apartment when you moved in e.g. renovated/unrenovated.
- Hand over keys, take final meter readings, get a confirmation from landlord that all is in order
- De-register your place of residence
- Get deposit sent to a bank account (usually takes 6-12 months), plus or minus refund/deficit on running costs (Betriebskosten)
Cancel Utilities:
- Phone
- Internet
- Water - usually part of your apartment costs (Betriebskosten)
- Gas
- Electricity
- Rundfunkbeitrag
Insurances:
- Health insurance
- Accident insurance
- Liability insurance
- Private pension
- Deutsche Rentenversicherung: You can claim back your contributions to the German pension system
Bank Account:
- Close bank account once you know that everything has been paid in/out that needs to be. You can write an order in your Bank’s branch to close your account at some point in the future.
Children:
- Cancel Kita contract
- Cancel Kita Gutschein
- Cancel Kindergeld
- Cancel Elterngeld
- Get vaccines up to date, if needed
- Get a copy of medical records, if needed
Miscellaneous:
- Have your mail forwarded or scanned and sent to you digitally. Review of options
- Cancel any subscriptions and memberships (e.g. gym, magazines, Bio box etc)
- Get a copy of your file from medical professionals (if required)
- Leave a power of attorney with someone you trust, if there are still loose ends to tie up
